emco Klima: displacement air outlet with infinitely variable flow-direction control
Creation of optimum and comfortable flows through rooms possible for both heating and cooling applications
emco Klima presented a round displacement air outlet for the realisation of mixed ventilation in the industrial sector at the ISH 2017 in Frankfurt. The emcoair IVA comes with an infinitely variable flow-direction control that allows a range of settings between vertical and horizontal radial jets to be made. The control makes the creation of optimum and comfortable flows through rooms possible for both heating and cooling applications. The air outlet boasts a special design that is able to achieve high penetration depths and throw distances at low sound power levels. The new product is therefore particularly suitable for use in large halls and rooms, such as industrial and production sites, commercial and trade-fair halls and concert and event venues. The interface to the company’s own differential temperature controller makes it easily possible to fully automatically control several air outlets in a single zone. Silicone-free, stainless-steel and explosion-proof versions are also optionally available for special requirements, e.g. in the automotive or food industries.
The displacement air outlet possesses a slotted cylinder and an internal inlet nozzle and damper. An infinitely-variable adjustment mimic for the damper ensures that it’s possible to create any shape of jet – from vertical to diffuse to horizontal. The damper’s division into two sections further ensures an even outflow symmetry for the air jet in all intermediate positions, which allows the direction of flow to be adapted more precisely to where people are located within the space and prevailing loads while enabling the air volumes to be distributed more specifically within the room to meet the respective requirements. A special inlet nozzle inside the air diffuser focuses the flow of air on to the damper. Directing the air in this way increases the discharge pulse, which has a positive effect on the penetration depths and throw distances. This new product enables penetration depths of more than 12 metres for heating and horizontal throw distances of more than seven metres for cooling.
Opening the damper when the air outlet is used for heating will create a vertical jet, which will travel along with the air exiting the slotted cylinder and so achieve high penetration depths. Closing the damper for the process of cooling will produce a horizontal jet that generates a high discharge impulse and so achieves long throw distances. The larger free cross-sections that the visually appealing cylinder slots create work in conjunction with the flow-optimised nozzle to also ensure low pressure losses and sound power levels. The air outlet is suitable for individual volume flows from 600 cubic metres an hour to around 10,000 cubic metres an hour and nominal diameters from DN 250 to DN 630. The system uses plug connectors to make connecting to the air duct quick and easy.
The open design used for the cylinder in the new product’s lower section in conjunction with the open damper make for easy cleaning – not only from outside but also from the inside. Executed in the optionally available CrNi or CrNiMo stainless steels, the air outlet thus meets higher hygiene demands that are made, for example, in the food industry. Another version where all components are without silicone is also optionally available as is an explosion-proof type with a special actuator and antistatic components.
The damper may be adjusted manually using a hand lever or Bowden cable or automatically using a thermal element or electric motor so that no auxiliary power is required. The displacement air outlet may also be coupled with the company’s own differential temperature controller to enhance comfort. It is in this way possible to control several air outlets at the same time. Only one sensor for the air admitted into the room and one for air temperature in the room are required for each zone to this end. The controller will then automatically regulate the temperature difference and automatically adjust the damper to create the required shape of jet.
