How does fresh air enter a room?
Supply air versions of Katherm trench systems
We have all become aware of how important fresh air is, at the very latest since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. There is now greater awareness of the need for regular ventilation and all sectors are now paying attention to it. We now know that the supply of fresh air into a room dilutes the concentration of pathogens and significantly reduces the risk of infection by viruses.
However, another important factor is the reduction of the concentration of CO2 in the room air and thus the air we breathe. Too high a CO2 content in the air causes fatigue and reduces a person’s ability to concentrate.
Did you know? Fresh air from trench systems
Supply air trenches can be added to all products in the trench system range. Fundamentally, there are two options for supplementing trench systems with supply air. Firstly, a 400 mm long standard supply air duct can be added to every product in the Katherm range. Alternatively, if required, the trenches can also be designed to fit around the structural situation on site.
Combining trench systems with supply air trenches
The Katherm ZL supply air trench is available for the entire range of trench systems. This is a 400 mm long trench unit that is attached to each Katherm unit. Various dimensions of round or oval spigots are available depending on the version of Katherm.

The air volume flow is regulated on site by built-in slide elements in the supply air ducts. Comfort is crucial and is taken into account when designing the trench systems. We can support you in complying with the current guidelines of DIN EN 16798 parts 1 and 2 and DIN EN ISO 7730.

Benefits of supply air trenches
- Available for a wealth of trench widths and heights
- Introduction of supply air through the Katherm trench system
- Low air outlet speeds, thus comfortable air supply
- Low noise levels when designed correctly
- Low investment and maintenance costs
- Visually continuous strip despite combining the Katherm trench system with Katherm ZL supply air trench
- No wearing parts / no electrically rotating parts
Supply air modules with the Katherm HK
Apart from introducing primary air through the Katherm ZL supply air trench, we have developed special supply air modules for our high-end Katherm HK units. The treated primary air passed below the trench system and then exits through a slot outlet on the facade side. This provides optimum screening in front of glazing with low and low-turbulence air outlet velocity.
Katherm HK with supply air modules
The air volume supplied can be conveniently adjusted. This is possible by the variable number of supply air modules per trench and the adjustable slider when the unit is operating. Up to 60 m³/h of primary air can be supplied per supply air module. Rely on our advice to find the right configuration.
Special supply air designs
Depending on the Katherm model selected, you can also use our special solutions to heat, cool or simply exchange preconditioned primary air. We would then design the solutions individually for your specific project. The design would provide for the introduction of supply air directly into the trench. Here are some examples.
With Katherm NK trench systems, which operate on the principle of natural convection, the supply air connections can be attached to the side or base of the trench. The connections help to boost output.
With the Katherm QK, the coordinated interplay of silent-running EC tangential fan and high-performance copper-aluminum coil ensures an optimum room climate. Supply air can be introduced into the room in a number of different ways. Below are two examples of air routing with a separate discharge trench and an example of the primary air flow through the coil.
The Katherm ID is designed for heating and cooling. Primary air is supplied to the coil by flow-optimized nozzles, with secondary air being induced into the coil.
Katherm QL units are displacement air units for draft-free displacement ventilation. Displacement air can also be introduced comfortably in heating mode, with the fresh air benefiting the indoor air quality.
